Conventions of a Magazine Front Cover

 

MASTHEAD

A masthead is the main Banner, Flag or Name of a magazine or a newspaper, this is commonly large font with eye catching colours at the top of the text.
 

SKYLINE

A type of banner the goes across the top of the page just above the masthead. This is there to appeal to the audice.
 

HEADLINE

It is usually the larges text on the page excluding the masthead. this is there to tell the audience the main point of the magazine.
 

MAIN IMAGE

The background of the magazine. Most of the time this includes a male or female model about the same age as the target audience or a well known celebrity in the genre in order to appeal to them.
 

BAR CODE

The bar code and date is a convention used for the institution the magazine will be bought from. It will then let the store know that this particular magazine is now not in stock in the store.

THUMB NAILS

Thumbnails are the parts of the cover that go below or next the the sell lines to give a preview of the contents of the magazine.

SELL LINES

The sell lines are a convention of a magazine cover used to tell the audience the feature articles in the magazine.

The Brief:


Preliminary exercise:

Using a DTP and an inmage program, produce the front page of a new school/collage magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and masthead. additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

Main Task:

The fornt page, contents and a double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text must be original, produced by you - minimum of four images.
